Marines, FMF Corpsmen, and Associate Members

Greetings from the Department of North Carolina Marine Corps League. It is my honor and pleasure to serve as your Commandant this year and I thank you for the opportunity and assure you the Department Staff will do everything in its power to continue it's mission and attain the goals set last year and this year to enable the Department of North Carolina to be a premiere Department in the National Marine Corps League.

Our primary Goal continues to be Communication and it is our desire that the Marine Corps League will have a presence in every community in this great State. The message we carry is tantamount to our success as a Veterans organization and our message, simply put, is service to God, Country and our Beloved Corps. The above is a Marine standing in a “med line” at a homeless shelter, he fought two tours in Iraq. Why! and that is not a question.

I have been working with the Triad Homeless Veterans Stand down along with a handful of Marine volunteers for the last 4 years. This is a well organized event that once a year reaches out to several counties in the area to help homeless veterans. Held at the National Guard Armory in Greensboro, the event provides minor first aid, dental services, a shower, clothing and a hot meal to hundreds of homeless veterans.

At it’s graduation ceremonies held Monday, 15 June, 24 recruits were elevated to Young Marine status, following 13 weeks of recruit training. Jim Haslam was the speaker and Tar Heel Det. Cmdt. John Staley was guest of honor.

Kim Gibbons,  a member of the Tar Heel Detachment, is the Commanding Officer of the unit. Supporting the unit as paymaster, is David Crouch, also a member.

The Department of North Carolina will hold it's 39th annual convention in Burlington, North Carolina this year. The convention is being hosted by the LCpl. Alan D. Lam Detachment and will be held
June 11 - 14, 2009.

Detachment 260 held their 1st annual Luau at their June Monday night meeting.

A touch of Hawaii hit the monthly meeting with a island cuisine meal, Hawaiian music, Hawaiian shirts and dresses. The luau theme was simply to get away from it all for one night. The 65 members that showed up enjoyed a great evening with no shortage of camaraderie.

Major Wynn came by to bid his last farewell and introduced us to the new Inspector Instructor, Major Lopez.

The entertainment committee con’d several Marines in to dancing for tips followed by two Marines in Hula skirts raising over 500 dollars...
