Table Rock Marine of the Year

Marine Corps League Table Rock Detachment 1197 of Morganton North Carolina selected George Greene Sergeant Major U.S.M.C. Retired for it's 2010 Marine of the Year Award. This award is the highest award bestowed upon a member of a Marine Corps League Detachment. George is a founding member of Detachment 1197. He was the guest of honor speaker at the Detachments first Marine Corps Birthday Ball in 2006.

George has participated in virtually all Detachment functions, including; services for fallen veterans, patriotic ceremonies, Toys for Tots and Detachment fund raisers.

He serves on the scholarship committee, nominating committee and MOY committee. The Marine Corp Leagues main purpose as stated in the preamble is to " preserve the tradition and promote the interest of the United States Marine Corps."

George is well qualified to fulfill that mission. He entered boot camp at Parris Island SC on July 11, 1941. Three months later he was in sea school training at the Navy shipyard in Portsmouth VA. In January of 1942 he was assigned guard duty aboard the USS WASP CV7. In September of 1942 the WASP was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine.

George survived and went on to serve thirty years in the Marine Corps. His service included tours with the 4th Marine Division, F.M.F. Pacific, Drill Instructor Parris Island, S.C. and three tours as Sergeant Major, the last at I & I Staff, Marine Corps Reserve training center, Orlando Fla. He retired on August 1st 1971.

George received many awards and decorations; Combat Action Ribbon with 2 Gold Stars, Marine Corps Good Conduct - 8th Award, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal with 3 Stars, Korean Service Medal with 3 Stars too name a few.

George has a BS in Social Science with a concentration in Criminal Justice from Gardner Webb College. After retiring he worked for the NC Outward Bound School and the NC Department of Corrections.

He is married to his wife of sixty - four years the former Mary Louise Thomas. They have 1 son, 2 daughters, 1 granddaughter, and 1 grandson.

Retired Sergeant Major Greene inspires and serves as a standard for Marine Corps league members everywhere. He is a Marines, Marine!
